Using Bargain Wines to Your Advantage
Using bargain wines is often preferable for occasions when it would be unwise to to invest a large amount of money in expensive wine.
Do you really want to use top-notch red wine for making sangria or for serving up at parties, when friends have already had enough to drink? No, I didn't think so!
Drinking Bargain Wines
Blended wine is usually cheaper and a reasonable bet in terms of drinkability. As a general rule, Chilean blends are the cheapest option, although it's often worth paying that little bit extra for Australian blends. In fact, a number of Australian producers market two excellent blends at the lower end of the price spectrum, one white and one red. The red is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and shiraz and the white consists of semillon and chardonnay. Keep an eye out for these grape combinations, if you're after a bargain!
Another winner at the cheaper end of the market is Spanish Rioja (both red and white). As Rioja is usually less fruity than the previously mentioned blends it is generally better for serving with food, rather than drinking on its own.
Other Uses of Bargain Wines
Sangria
If you're making sangria, you need red quaffing wine - and lots of it. As sangria is made from red wine, sugar, fruit juice and spirits, the quality of the red wine becomes largely secondary. This is where boxed wines come into their own. Buy large boxes that are relatively cheap - no one will notice! Be sure to purchase reasonable quality fruit juice and don't go for the absolute cheapest wine as you may live to regret it, the following morning!
Large Parties and Receptions
When serving wine to a large party, cost is obviously important. As a rule, boxed whites are generally more palatable than boxed reds, so if want to trim costs, anywhere, buying cheaper white wine may be a safer option.
A great way to improve boxed red wine is to add a reasonable quality bottle of red wine. Provided that you choose the correct bottle of red, this can make an impressive difference to the taste. Of course, you do need some suitable decanters or serving carafes and a little patience to pull this one off, successfully.
Finally, choose your nibbles wisely. Plain potato chips will do little to help you disguise a poor wine. Instead opt for a selection of cheeses, as they will enhance the flavor of even the cheapest of wines.

April - Wine Lover-
Another Great Wine Lover Article Making Wine Like a Pro Wine making is an easy, cost-efficient way to stock up on your favorite vintages. Although the wine-making process is fairly simple, it's important to follow the steps carefully to ensure you don't miss any elements. These steps will be crucial to the success of your batch. Once you've decided to make a batch of wine, the first thing to consider is the equipment needed. The following is a list of the wine making equipment required to make a basic batch of red wine: Large nylon straining bag Cloth (any kind will do) Large pail (with a lid) Hydrometer Thermometer Acid titration kit Clear, bendable plastic tubing (a half inch in diameter) Two, one gallon glass jugs Corks Hand corker Fermentation lock and bung Wine bottles (between 5 and 7) After you've assembled the necessary equipment, just follow these easy steps and you'll produce a great batch of wine in practically no time at all: 1. Prepare the Produce First, inspect the fruit to ensure the grapes are ripe and free of insects or other contaminants. Put the grapes in the straining bag and measure the sugar level using your hydrometer. A hydrometer can be purchased at any wine making store. The sugar density should be 22 ideally. Also, remember to remove the stems from all grapes in order to make your wine smoother and sweeter. Finish this step by transferring the ingredients into the jug. 2. Adjust the Juice This is a crucial step in the wine-making process. You must measure the acid content using your titration kit. The ideal level is 6 to 7 grams per liter for red wine and 6.5 to 7.5 per liter for white wine. You'll want to regulate the sugar level by measuring it with your hydrometer from time to time. Sugar levels should remain at 22 for both red and white wines. The fermentation should remain around 70-degrees-Fahrenheit for basic red wines. Abiding by these temperatures will ensure that the process goes smoothly. 3. Rack the Wine Insert your clear plastic hose into the wine jug and attach it to the opening of the other (empty) sanitized jug. Siphon the wine from one jug to the other in order to keep the wine in a completely sanitized container. Next, fit the jug with a bung and fermentation lock. This step may take some time, but it's important to be slow and careful so you don't stir up the sediment. Let the wine sit for an extended period of time (some people choose to wait weeks or even months). 4. Bottle the Wine Bottling your wine is the easy part. Simply siphon your wine from the jug into your wine bottles. Be sure to leave about 2-inches at the top of every bottle, otherwise it will cause overflow when the cork is inserted. To cork your wine bottles simply insert a cork into the hand corker, position the corker over the lever and insert. 5. Drink and Enjoy! Monday #full-date - - Gold Book-
A Featured Gold Book Article Tempranillos Role As A New Varietal Wine In Australia Tempranillo is the premium red wine grape variety from the Rioja region in Spain. It is now challenging Sangiovese as the up and coming star of the red varietal wine scene in Australia. New plantings throughout Australian wine regions over the past five years are just coming into bearing. In fact on a percentage basis Tempranillo is growing in popularity more rapidly than any other variety. What makes this variety so exciting? Well, it makes wines which have good colour and good fruit flavours along with low acid and low tannins. This adds up to an easy drinking style. The wine also goes well with American oak. In the vineyard the variety has a short growing season which makes it suitable for cooler areas. In Spain the variety is the backbone of the wines of the Rioja and the Ribera del Duero regions in Northern and Central Spain. In these regions it is often blended with Graciano or Cabernet sauvignon playing a minor role. It is a component of Ribera del Duero's famous Vega Sicilia, the Spanish equivalent to Grange. In Portugal the variety is used as a minor component in port, and some red table wines. Elsewhere in the world the major plantings are in Argentine and California. In the latter region it is called Valdepenas and is regarded as a unsuitable for making fine wine. Tempranillo has taken off in Australia only in the past few years. Brown Brothers have been a pioneer of the variety, but there are now over 50 producers in about half of Autralias sixty wine regions. Although McLaren Vale has the highest number of producers variety is widely planted throughout the mainland Australian wine regions. The highest rated Tempranillo in James Halliday's Wine Companion 2005 is from Manton's Creek Vineyard in the Mornington Peninsula. Casella Wines, the makers of the hugely successful [yellowtail] range are also interested in the variety. They received a silver medal for a 2003 Tempranillo at the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show 2004. The obvious food match is to go with Spanish style dishes. A lighter bodied Tempranillo would go well with tapas, those delightful little snacks that originally were designed for accompanying sherry. A little plate of olives, some prawns and a few slices of Chorizo sausage may just what is needed. The Spanish also love jamon, dry cured ham. Many bars in Spain have dozens of hams hanging up and there is always a ham in a special rack ready to be thinly carved for a snack to accompany a glass of wine. Sheep farming is a major industry in the in the Rioja and the Ribera del Duero regions. Hence grilled and especially roast lamb are local specialties, as well as the ideal accompaniment to Tempranillo. Sheep milk cheeses, roast stuffed peppers and vegetable casseroles would also be enhanced by a glass or two of these fine wines. What then can we expect in future from Tempranillo in Australia? It is an interesting fact is that the variety is being tried in many wine regions. Virtually all of the plantings in Australia are new and the vineyard managers and winemakers are just starting to climb the learning curve. Some enthusiasts say Tempranillo is the next big thing in Australian red wines; others think that the Italian variety Sangiovese will triumph. The next few years will tell, in the meantime there will be some interesting wines to try.

Champagne Wine For Your Reading Pleasure Why You Should Have a Wine Cellar If you don't own a wine cellar and you collect wine its time to reconsider. Wine collectors everywhere are learning that to preserve you must have control over the climate and the temperature of the wine. The only real way to do this is to have your very own wine cellar. In the movies we are used to seeing a wine cellar in some dark damp under ground bunker. However to have and own a wine cellar doesn't have to be exactly that way anymore. Now we have options with our wine cellars and wine storage. Long ago the only way to keep wine at cool enough temperatures to preserve was to store it under ground away from the heat and sunlight. Today things have changed with wine storage greatly.
What purpose does a wine cellar serve you might ask. Well for one a wine cellar keeps the wine at whatever temperature you'd like to store it at. Keeping wine cool and at the right humidity can make your wine store and last years longer than not doing so. Another great thing about a wine cellar is that it can keep your collection organized and free of dust. Many wine cellars have a cabinet style build much like a stand alone closet. I would also suggest getting yourself a set of wine bottle hanging labels as well to help organize your collection. These simple hang around the head of the bottle and on it you list the type of wine and the vintage year.
You must figure how much room you want to dedicate to your wine collection. Do you want to dedicate a whole room or basement? If so you may consider custom built wine racks. Custom built wine racks are nice because you can decide how long or wide to have them built. The bad part about customized wine cellar racks is that they are very expensive. I prefer to go with wine cellar cabinets. They typically run in the low thousands but if you are a serious collector that can be pennies on the dollar saved. Some of your collection will one day be worth mid hundreds or more so sometimes spending a little to save a lot goes a long way. Cabinet style wine cellar stand tall and up right and can have solid doors of glass doors to see in. However make sure if you have glass doors it stays away from windows and out of the sunlight. Sunlight even the slightest amount can soil your collection; keep your collection as safe as possible.
If you do not have thousands to spend there are many options that you can find about anywhere that range in the low hundreds and can hold over 150 bottles. This is the best option for anyone who is just starting out a collection. Many times you can find a nice wine cellar with glass doors for well under $500 that holds many more bottles than your collection can amass for the first couple of years. The options are up to you just remember this hobby is what you put into it and without proper wine storage your collection won't last long.

Today's Wine Enthusiast Article Store Wine with Vacuum Storage If you drink wine you may recognize this issue. You drink half a bottle after entertaining guests or family. After the guests leave or you are done with dinner you re-cork the bottle of wine. Four days later when you go back to drink the left over wine you find that the delicate aromas and flavors are gone and that the wine is about half as good as it was on the first day. Vacuum Wine Storage may be an easy simple solution to your problem. While it is easy to see why you'd want to just pop the cork back into the bottle and stick it in the refrigerator to store your left over wine I'm going to show you why you will change your mind after this. First and foremost most wines lose many of their flavors and aromas just after 2 days of opening. While the wine cork itself offers a little protection from oxygen getting back into the wine the bad news is that oxygen has already entered the wine which in turn begins the spoiling process. That means by this time your wine is already not as good as the first glass and no longer as fresh. I don't know about anyone else but I only like to drink and eat the freshest wines and foods. Call me picky but thats what I enjoy about what I consume;freshness.
The best two ways to properly reseal and store your wine are very simple solutions but be prepared to spend a small amount of money. The first way a vacuum wine pump. A vacuum wine pump which you may have already guessed pumps the left over oxygen out of your wine. The easiest to use and best model is a Vacu-Vin Concerto Wine Saver which will cost you about $20. Not bad considering the it will keep your wine fresh for about an extra week, so in total about 10 days. You simply pump the air out of the bottle until the unit provides an audible click to let you know when the perfect vacuum level has been reached then place the vacu-vin bottle sealer on the top and place the bottle back into the refrigerator.
The second way and my favorite way is to use the Metrokane V-1 Decanter. The Metrokane V-1 Decanter is a great tool because it combines a decanter with a vacuum sealer and sells for about $79. The decanter itself is a lead free crystal and sleek in design. Its use is simple and it decants the wine which allows aeration for the best flavor as well as vacuum sealing when you are done. First you pour your wine into the decanter straight from your wine bottle to aerate the wine which starts the decanting process. After your wine has aerated 20-30 minutes serve it to you or your guests. When done drinking the wine you simply pump out the oxygen with the vacuum pump it comes with and place the sealing stopper into the decanter bottle and refrigerate. Its that easy to preserve your wine for up to two weeks. This particular product is my favorite not only due to the fact that its easy to use and store and relatively inexpensive but they also offer a 5 year warranty on the product. Since I have been using vacuum sealing for my wine I will never go back to just plunging a regular cork back in the bottle. The ultimate in freshness is easy and affordable and once you have the vacuum sealers they last for years. You only need one vacuum sealer unless you plan on opening and consuming more than one bottle of wine at a time.
